Local History

Galloway is the home of Scottish Kings so, if you are historically minded you can trace the history of John Balliol (Balliol College, Oxford and Sweetheart Abbey, New Abbey) or Robert the Bruce (the spider, Battle of Bannockburn and scourge of the English in the 14th Century, securing Scotland's independence.) There are several old abbeys and castles to explore.

Galloway was also home to the Covenanters during The Reformation. Of course Scotland's national poet, Robert Burns lived and died in Dumfries, where much of his life can be traced.

Outdoor Activities

There are many sporting facilities on your doorstep, particularly golf, sailing, fishing and mountain biking.

There is a 18 hole golf course 2 minutes from the Cottage and the Championship Links course at Southerness is only 10 minutes drive.

Sailing and yachting are available at nearby Kippford and there are opportunities for fishing at sea and at the many local lochs.

Part of the 7 stanes mountain bike trail is in Dalbeattie Forest which also has many walking paths. You can enjoy the many coastal and beach walks that include bird watching at RSPB nature reserves.

Leisure Pursuits

You may prefer simply to explore the many towns and villages such as Dalbeattie, Castle Douglas, Kirkcudbright (harbour and art galleries) and Dumfries, all within easy reach of the cottage.

Why not visit the outstanding national gardens that are full of colour throughout the year such as Threave and Logan Botanical.

These attractions are not exhaustive and you will be able to add many more to the list. It is recommended that you obtain a copy of the Tourist Board magazine or visit Dumfries and Galloway Online.
